Pere Augé

About me

Andorra, Barcelona, family, law, sport… and a kitchen that, for some reason, has always been alight.

My name is Pere Augé and, if I had to explain where I come from, I would say that my story is a blend that is very much my own: Andorra, Barcelona, family, law books, sport… and a kitchen that has always been alight.

Andorra, Barcelona and a sense of belonging

The origins

Andorra, Barcelona and a sense of belonging

Although my roots are Andorran, my earliest years were spent in Barcelona. That said: when the holidays came, it was time to go home. We would head up to Andorra, to Escaldes-Engordany, my home parish.

That "heading up" was almost a ritual: from the big, impersonal city to the small country, from the buildings and the smell of petrol to the clean, fresh air, from the Burgos bar and the stoves commanded by Auntie Ignasieta and, ultimately, to that sense of belonging which, as a child, you cannot put into words but which already stays with you and defines you.

Espot, Casa Sucarana and the family memory

The family

Espot, Casa Sucarana and the family memory

Born of the undeniable love between Maria Rosa and Pere, which lasted until the very last moment of both their lives, my story has a great deal to do with my mother's two surnames, which are not merely letters on a piece of paper: they are an account that tells the story of a life.

Espot anchors me to a family deeply rooted in Andorra, to Casa Sucarana; from there come those first childhood memories in Escaldes-Engordany which, together with my mother's unforgettable tales, have allowed me to build a historical memory that reaches back many years.

Grandfather Josep, a brilliant bohemian

The Augé surname

Grandfather Josep, a brilliant bohemian

And of course, Augé, which connects me to a grandfather, Josep, a man of great character, one of those we would today call "irreplaceable", who lived through the Barcelona of the early twentieth century and who, although he excelled in the world of banking, truly loved reading, writing and lyric song. A brilliant bohemian, a contemporary of Santiago Rusiñol, with a short but intense life.

I never got to meet him in person, but thanks to my mother's stories I have the genuine feeling of having known him. And so it was that, with my father's permission, one day I decided to honour his memory and take his surname: alongside my name —Pere— there was fixed forever what I truly am, bound to my origin, Andorra.

First contact with the law

Grandmother Trini and the legal books

My first "real" contact with the world of law has a great deal to do with my grandmother Trini Espot. She was widowed very young and worked hard in Barcelona so that my mother, an only child, would want for nothing. She specialised in advising on and selling legal books and helped build the libraries of some of the finest lawyers in the Barcelona of the time.

At home there was law everywhere —literally—: as a child I watched codes, manuals and legal doctrine come in and pile up the way other children watch boxes of toys go by. In the summer I would accompany her on her visits to the firms, and that is how I came to know the legal profession even before I knew I would end up devoting myself to it.

Law in Barcelona and the mentorship of Bufet Pintó Ruiz

Education

Law in Barcelona and the mentorship of Bufet Pintó Ruiz

When the time came, the decision was an easy one to make: I studied Law at the University of Barcelona. I then rounded off my training with a master's degree in Taxation and preparatory doctoral studies.

And then came one of those chapters that leave their mark: I joined Bufet Pintó Ruiz as a trainee. I had an extraordinary teacher and mentor, Mr. Pintó, a unique and irreplaceable jurist. There I learned technique, judgement, professional ethics and that very particular way of working. I owe much of what I am as a lawyer to that firm and that team. I will say it plainly: eternal gratitude.

Going home, to Andorra

Going home, to Andorra

After six years working in Barcelona, and with the sense of having reached enough maturity, I did what deep down I knew I would end up doing: I went home, to Andorra. I began my career as a senior lawyer, working across the different branches of law —civil, administrative, commercial and tax— and I discovered criminal law, which until then I had never explored.

Over time I gradually fine-tuned my compass: corporate law and strategic international taxation were, and still are, the fields in which I have specialised, because they have become the most useful to the cause: guiding those who can help project Andorra towards the future, both socially and economically.

Invest With Andorra and the Andorra Brand

A calling for the country

Invest With Andorra and the Andorra Brand

One day I discovered in myself what was to motivate me most and what still motivates me more than anything else today: an innate calling to promote Andorra as a natural destination for international talent and investment, aware of the need to diversify our economy after the shock of the 2007 financial crisis.

It is in this period that my collaboration with the Andorran Business Confederation (CEA) was born, where I first chaired the International Relations Committee and later the Andorra Brand Committee. And from there came travel, conferences and a great deal of promotion of the new model that Andorra was offering the world under the slogan "Invest With Andorra": from Spain to France, taking in Russia, China, the United Arab Emirates, Azerbaijan, Mexico and everywhere there was an opportunity to explain all the good things our country could offer.

Writing, radio and television

Communicating

Writing, radio and television

At the same time I began to write —because sometimes writing is another way of putting the world in order— and to contribute to media such as ARA.AD, El Periòdic d'Andorra, the All Pyrenees portal and the magazine La Nova Escapada, as well as to radio and television: at RTVA, on the programme "Ara i Aquí" with Àlex Lliteras and, later, on "Fent Números" with Jordi Lorente, where I still contribute today.

The Andorra Brand, shelved

2019

The Andorra Brand, shelved

In 2019 things changed and, once an ill-fated Andorra Brand project had been presented —only to end up filed away in the drawer of history because of the political changes of the time— I stepped down from the active part of the CEA as a board member. I remain connected to it as a member of the jury for the CEA Awards, especially the Andorra Brand award, always in the hope that the project will be revived, all the more so in times of indecision and lack of vision for the future such as the present.

Sport

Andorra Club Gel and UE Santa Coloma

On a personal level, in recent years I have gradually drawn closer to the world of sport. Although I practise it intermittently (mainly at home, which is where one believes oneself an athlete without anyone passing judgement), I have been far more interested in the organisational side: both promoting high performance, as a distinctive feature where Andorra had a great deal to say, and managing sports clubs.

This has led me to currently chair Andorra Club Gel, which is home to figure skating on ice, and Unió Esportiva Santa Coloma, a well-established football club in the Andorran first division and with the largest youth academy in the country.

Father of Pere and Pau

On the family front, I am very proud of my role as father to Pere and Pau. Pere Junior —sociable and a humanist, entrepreneurial and versatile— today leads an innovative coliving project in Andorra. Pau —brilliant and creative, persevering and tenacious— is a lawyer specialising in strategic international taxation and moves between Andorra and Dubai, deploying his talent across two worlds.

Catherine and Raúl

Catherine and Raúl

Later on, a new chapter in life has given me the chance to keep nurturing my paternal instinct with Catherine, a brilliant Law graduate who is rounding off her training with a demanding master's degree at ESADE and for whom, I am quite sure, a great career awaits, and with Raúl, the youngest, our ice skater, all heart and spirit of sacrifice, with a promising future in sport if everything continues as it has so far.

The Chrysalis Foundation

Commitment

The Chrysalis Foundation

Because the professional and family group I lead feels especially motivated to give back to society everything that life has given us, we have felt the moral obligation to drive forward an initiative that does its bit to support those groups who need a boost, especially the youngest or those disadvantaged by a social, economic or health situation.

And so, very soon, the Chrysalis Foundation will begin its journey, designed to strengthen grassroots sport in Andorra, to help talented young people who lack sufficient means —with sports and/or study grants— and to lend a hand to initiatives aimed at those who need it.

Cooking

The great hobby

Cooking

And now, yes, my main hobby, the one that has always been here even if it sometimes hides behind my diary: cooking. As a child I was the typical "chubby little glutton", which made sense, because I was very well looked after by two cooks of heavenly standard: my grandmother Trini and my mother Maria Rosa. I remember spending whole stretches of time watching them cook, fascinated by that everyday magic of hands that know what they are doing.

Between my organisational side and my calling as a domestic "chef", I have become a specialist in bringing together gastronomic gatherings with family and friends. I love good food and, if it is paired with good wines, all the better; always in moderation and with good conversation, though, which is how you truly enjoy it.

So there it is: yes, I am a lawyer, I am Andorran, I am interested in projects that help secure my country's future, I love being a father and giving rein to my protective instinct. And if one day you pass by my home, the most likely thing is that, before talking about anything else, I will ask you: "Are you hungry?".
